CURE OF CANCER BY COMBINATIONS OF TREATMENT WHICH INCLUDE RADIATION – PLANNING TREATMENT
There are some cancers which are so likely to spread through the bloodstream that it is best to take it for granted that they already have when planning treatment. Combinations of chemotherapy with surgery and/or radiation have a higher chance of curing these types of cancer than any one treatment on its own. These cancers [...]

ENJOYING A HEART-HEALTHY DIET: THE DIABETIC DIET AND THE DIABETIC EXERCISE PROGRAM
As is true for the general population, diabetic patients benefit greatly from a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet. Happy new year, sort of

Researchers Create First Targeted Knockout Rats Using Zinc Finger Nuclease Technology
In a paper published in the July 24, 2009 issue of Science, researchers describe the novel application of ZFNs to generate rats with permanent, heritable gene mutations, paving the way for the development of novel genetically modified animal models of human disease. ZFN technology will make the generation of such animals faster and will create new opportunities in species other than mice."Until now, rat geneticists lacked a viable technique for 'knocking out,' or mutating, specific genes to understand their function," said Howard Jacob, Ph.D. Director of the Human and Molecular Genetics Center at the Medical College of Wisconsin. "This study demonstrates that ZFN technology bypasses the current need to conduct cumbersome experiments involving nuclear transfer (cloning) or embryonic stem ce...

A Clinical Trial, A Suicide And Patient Safety

Cymbalta: A Sweet ROI for Chronic Pain Indication
One new indication for pain = $500 Million in additional sales!Once a drug is developed for a single indication, gaining approval for additional indications can be sweet icing on the profit cake.As an example, take Cymbalta, which was originally approved in 2004 for adults with major depression. Later the FDA granted Lilly, the company that manufactures Cymbalta, approval to market Cymbalta for treating nerve pain in diabetics, GAD (ie, "generalized anxiety disorder"; see "eGAD! How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Cymbalta!") and fibromyalgia, a condition characterized by chronic fatigue and muscle and joint pain. Now, as reported in this Bloomberg article ("Lilly’s Cymbalta Helps Chronic Pain in U.S. Review"), Cymbalta may be approved for chronic lower back and knee pain, an indicat...

Big Pharma takes on risk with biosimilar programs
Companies like Pfizer, Teva and Hospira are among the developers trying to get an early jump on the biosimilar drug market. A pathway for biosimilar drugs was approved when the healthcare bill was approved earlier this year, but the FDA has yet to set out clear guidelines for development of the copycat drugs. But big companies can't resist the call of the potentially lucrative market for generic biologics. Pfizer is set on creating "bio-betters," Hospira is in the process of developing an Epogen biosimilar, and Cipla has inked a number of new deals which will help it build a discount biosimilars franchise. These developers won't have to conduct new trials of their drugs. But they will have to provide data proving that their products are as safe, pure, and effective as the or...

Studies pinpoint key targets for MRSA vaccine
Two studies point to a new way to a vaccinate against drug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus -- also known as MRSA -- the leading US cause of skin, soft tissue, bloodstream and lung infections, as well as deaths from infectious disease. One counteracts the bacteria's tools for evading the immune system; the other disrupts the germ's tissue-damaging mechanism. Each approach reduced the microbe's virulence in mice. The combination may protect people from MRSA and provide lasting immunity.

Bringing Celebrities and Pharmaceutical Companies Together to Sell Prescription Drugs
I read a fascinating article today posted on MedEdNews Insider Blog about the formation of a new agency called Rx Entertainment that helps to match celebrities with direct-to-consumer advertising campaigns created by pharmaceutical companies. Admittedly, I hadn’t thought much about the matching process, but in the past I have posted a few rants about direct-to-consumer advertising (DTC), Brooke Shields hawking Latisse for Allergan and the Robert Jarvik Lipitor brouhaha. So, the post about an entertainment agency that helps to match celebrities with DTC prescription drug advertising campaigns piqued my interest. The blog post was actually an interview that was conducted by the blogger with the founder of Entertainment Rx (I love the name)! The interviewer asked the Rx Entert...

Drug firms hiding negative research are unfit to experiment on people | The Guardian
This week the drug company AstraZeneca paid out £125m to settle a class action. More than 17,500 patients claim the company withheld information showing that schizophrenia drug quetiapine (tradename Seroquel) can cause diabetes. So why do companies pay out money before cases get to court? An interesting feature of litigation is that various documents enter the public domain. This is how we know about the tobacco industry's evil plans to target children, the fake academic journal that Elsevier created for Merck's marketing department, and so on.One of the most revealing documents ever to come out of a drug company emerged from an earlier quetiapine case: an email from John Tumas, publications manager at AstraZeneca. In it, he helpfully admits that they do everything I say drug companies do...

Free Operating Agreement For S-Corp
I just finished filing my incorporation for Beat Run Inc, and I wanted to report how pleased I am with Rocketlawyer's free incorporation service! Rocketlawyer is running a special where you can get a completely free incorporation filing done for simply signing up for a trial of their legal docs service. If you have an incorporation to file, I'd recommend taking advantage of this offer while it lasts. You can always go back and cancel your subscription, and you'll end up with a free incorporation, saving you hundreds of dollars in legal fees. Eric asked me whether incorporating using Rocketlawyer is as safe and legally sound as hiring your own attorney. I can attest that the documents you get back are the same ones you get from a local lawyer you hire and pay hundreds or thousands to f...
